Getting Accepted to College
It's sad to think that all hopes and dreams
can be shattered by one letter in the mail that says, "Regretfully
you have not been accepted to our college/university...."
If you have ambitious dreams of getting into a particular college
or university, the key to achieving these dreams is planning and
preparation. Below are some ideas that will help you to
prepare for being accepted into the college of your dreams.
All of these ideas below apply to those already in high school,
although middle school kids can certainly get started.
1. Get involved in several extra-curricular activities.
Colleges and universities want students that are well-rounded.
It is not as good to be slightly involved in 15 different things
than it is to be really involved in just a few activities.
2. Sports stars: If you are a sports star, you should
consider adding at least 1 academic activity such as the drama club
or debate team to round off your skills. If you are very busy
with sports (high school sports require a daily commitment for
several hours), and don't really have time for additional clubs or
teams, consider volunteer work for local charities and causes.
3. Study for the SAT and ACT. Preparation for these
exams should be done at least 6 months in advance. Set up a
daily study schedule so that you can be fully prepared for the exam.
Do not plan any major activity or event the night before this test.
Be well rested.
4. Have people proofread your essays and applications for
errors and typos. First impressions go a long way and if you
have typos and mistakes all over your applications, you may
jeopardize your acceptance.
